Visions of Venice is a collection the depicts the poetic atmosphere of Venice through a deeply personal lens. The figures and color palette evoke both the grandeur and old fashion of Venice, portraying it not just as a place, but as a living memory of the 12th-century Carnevale di Venezia, which is a period of mass celebrations that involved parades, masquerade balls, music, and theatrical performances.
Masks and elaborate costumes were worn by people from all walks of life. Apart from to being used as festive decorations, these masks fulfilled a significant social role by providing a momentary escape for only a few days a year from a highly structured society that is regulated by rules and norms.
By hiding their identities people were free to flirt, stir up satire, or even make political comments embodying the spirit of theatricality and playful transgression without worrying about the consequences. This created a unique environment where aristocrats could mix with commoners and engage in behavior that is usually restricted to be temporarily broken.
